Verizon to Open at 6AM for the Motorola Droid Release

If you’re not picking up your Motorola Droid at Best Buy early and are eager to go directly to the Verizon retailer to pick it up, pencil in 6AM on your calendar. That is the time that a BGR contact is reporting, stores will open at 6AM November 6th to begin sales of the Motorola Droid and HTC Droid Eris.

Of course if you want to ensure you get a phone, you might have to lineup a little early. How early are you willing to arrive is the question? Or will you snap it up online? Let us know in the comments how and when you plan to pick up your Droid.

Pre-Order Verizon Droid at Best Buy Today

Starting today, Best Buy Mobile will begin to take pre-orders for the Motorola DROID. The DROID is launching on November 6th for $199 and we expect it to be a huge success, so if you’re thinking about going DROID, head to Best Buy as soon as you can! Buying your phone at Best Buy is a much easier process than going through Verizon stores because Best Buy offers instant rebates (instead of mail-in-rebates).

Engadget Gets Hands-on with the Motorola Droid

Engadget has the first hands on video posted over on their site.  If you listen closely to the woman from Verizon you must have the keyboard open, or have the phone in one of the available at an additional charge docks to get the phone into landscape mode.

The woman also talks as if the ability to voice search Google is a new thing specifically for the Droid, Umm hello sister I can do that from any phone.  It was nice to see that you don’t need the MotoBlur overlay in order to link up your contacts with their social network memberships.

The only cool thing about the Verizon Droid is Android 2.0 and Google Navigation, both of which will be available to soon on other Android devices.

All in all the Verizon Droid so far is very disappointing from its “eh” look to the necessity to keep it docked or open the keyboard to get into landscape mode.  Certainly hasn’t lived up to the hype.  NEXT!

Google Navigation Goodness Available on Android 2.0

Google has announced Google Maps Navigation for Android 2.0 that will offer users free turn-by-turn navigation. You heard that right. Google Maps. Free Turn-By-Turn Navigation on Android 2.0.

Google Maps Navigation has everything you’d expect to find in a GPS application 3D views, turn-by-turn voice guidance, and automatic rerouting.  Google has also added compelling new features ‘built from the ground up to take advantage of your phone’s Internet connection’. Google lists seven features that are possible because Google Maps Navigation is connected to the Internet:

  • Always have the most recent maps and business data
  • Search with the power of Google (no need to know exact address, Google can do the legwork)
  • Search by voice
  • Live traffic data just like you see in the current Google Maps with real-time information
  • Search along route allows you to search for results that won’t take you far from your route
  • Satellite View — high resolution, 3D view of your route
  • Street View — you’ll be able to see where you need to turn, what your final address is, etc

This is big for Google Maps and even bigger for Android 2.0. Turn-by-turn navigation has probably been the most requested feature for Google Maps and for Google Maps Navigation to come native on the Droid (with a slick car dock UI to boot), and future Android 2.0 devices is a huge bullet point victory over competing mobile smartphones. Eventually, Google Maps Navigation will make its way to other phones but there’s nothing like being first (and nothing like being free!).

With the release of the Motorola Droid running Android 2.0 on Verizon there is only one question that remains — Will Verizon lock this feature down and require their users to pay for the Verizon branded Verizon Navigator?

Looks Like a Verizon Android Device Will Launch November 6th

Found in today’s San Diego Tribune.

Now the question begs to be asked. Which Droid is launching? What with Verizon marketing all their Android devices under the Droid name. So will it be the Motorola Droid or Calgary or the Droid Eris? I’m sure we’ll find out October 28th when Verizon holds their big press conference.
